Ordo for the First week of Advent

This week marks the start of the new liturgical year, with the first Sunday of Advent.

The season of Advent is the most complicated in the calendar so far as the Office goes, so do take the opportunity to read through the notes on the Office in Advent.

In particular, it is important to remember that all of the Sundays of Advent are first class, and so have their own antiphons and proper texts.  During the week, the chapter, responsory and hymn for Lauds and Vespers are not those set out in the psalter section of the Diurnal (or breviary) but are for the season.

Ordo for January 2015

This calendar (Ordo) for the traditional Benedictine Office has been prepared accordance with the calendar and rubrics of the Monastic Breviary of 1963 for use by all Benedictine monasteries and oblates attached to them.  This Ordo is intended as an aid to those who wish to say the Benedictine Office using the order of the psalms and prayers as specified in St Benedict’s Rule and developed as part of the patrimony of the Order of St Benedict.

Variations from the calendar

Individual monasteries may, however, observe their own Ordos and use rubrics that differ somewhat from those specified in the Monastic Breviary.

In addition to the feasts specified in the calendar, it will be necessary to add in any local feasts particular to the monastery, parish, diocese and country.

While the Benedictine Calendar generally follows the structure of the 1962 Roman Extraordinary Form (EF) Calendar, the monastic calendar, it does differ from it in some respects, and the calendar below generally indicates where there are feasts of the EF calendar that are omitted or celebrated differently in the Benedictine general calendar.

Monastic Diurnal

A number of Catholic and other books are available to say the Benedictine Divine Office in its traditional form and calendar.

These include the two volume 1963 Breviarium Monasticum (out of print), the Antiphonale Monasticum (containing the chants for the day hours and available through the monastery of Le Barroux and elsewhere), and books for the individual hours available through Clear Creek Abbey in the US and on lulu.

The most useful starting point for most people, however, will surely be the Monastic Diurnal (MD) published by Farnborough Abbey.  Originally intended for novices and those religious travelling outside the monastery, it provides the day hours (Lauds to Compline) in a parallel English/Latin text version with translations prepared by monks of that monastery in the first half of the twentieth century. The current edition is essentially the 1963 edition of that book, which carried an imprimatur.

Accordingly, the calendar provided here provides page references to the MD, and instructions on how to say the Benedictine Office using that book can also be found on the blog (see the right hand sidebar). Please note that the Diurnal is not page numbered sequentially, but differentiates sections of the book by use of asterisks, square brackets and so forth.

Matins is not included in the Diurnal, but occasional notes (generally where the hour does not follow the normal pattern) have been included here for the benefit of those who use other books to say that hour.

Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost

This is one of those rare years where the Twenty-fourth Sunday really is the last of the year, and thus we avoid the seemingly endless repetition of the propers for it at Mass!  The Gospel is St Matthew 24:13-25, a warning of the end times.

Ordo for February 2015

I Vespers of the First Sunday of Lent: antiphons and psalms of Saturday, rest from MD 184* ff

The Ordinary of the Office in Lent (from the First Sunday in Lent up to Passion Sunday)

The Ordinary of the ferial Office in Lent is set out in the Farnborough edition of the Monastic Diurnal at MD 190* ff.

For those saying Matins (not in the Diurnal): the invitatory antiphon on weekdays is the same as throughout the year; the hymn is for the season of Lent and is the same each day (Ex more); the readings during the week are usually patristic, relating to the Gospel of the Mass set for that day; and the chapter verse for Nocturn II is for the season (Is 1:16-18).

At Lauds and Vespers: chapters, hymns, etc of the season replace those in the psalter section; the canticle antiphons are proper for each day; and each day there are two sets of collects: the first for use from Matins to None; the second for Vespers.

During Lent, third class feasts are generally reduced to commemorations only.  In the case of Class I & II feasts, where the feast displaces the Lent texts, a commemoration of the day is made at both Lauds and Vespers using the respective collects, canticle antiphon and versicle that occurs before the relevant canticle at that hour.
