June 26: Second Sunday after Pentecost, Class II: SS John and Paul, Martyrs, memorial
The Magnificat antiphon at I Vespers, 'The child Samuel ministered before God unto Heli, and the word of the Lord was precious in his sight' refers to the readings at Matins, which starts today on I Kings (I Samuel), with the story of the last of the Old Testament Judges.
The Gospel is Luke 14:16-24, the parable of the rich man who invites many to a feast, but the invitees refuse to come.
SS John and Paul were early martyrs under the reign of Julian the Apostate. Their tombs were found below the Church dedicated to them in Rome.
