August 7: Eighth Sunday after Pentecost (and first of August); SS Sixtus II, Pope and Martyr; and Felicissimus and Agapitus, Martyrs, Memorial
The first Nocturn readings for Matins in the Office switch over today to 'for the month' mode, starting today with the Book of Proverbs. The Gospel is Luke 16:1-9, the parable of the unjust steward.
Pope Sixtus II, whose name appears in the canon of the Mass, was Pope from August 30, 257 to August 6, 258, and was martyred under the Emperor Valerian. Felicissimus and Agapitus were his deacons, and were martyred with him.
