October 1-2: First Sunday of October/Sixteenth after Pentecost

Matins this Sunday moves to 1 Maccabees (the subject of the Magnificat antiphon for I Vespers), which opens with an explanation for the hellenization of the Middle East as a result of the conquests of Alexander the Great.

This Sunday's Gospel is St Luke 14:1-11: Jesus heals a man with dropsy (Benedictus antiphon) and tells a parable about taking the lowest seat at a wedding feast (Magnificat antiphon).
