Ordo notes for the Octave of Easter (April 1-7, 2018)

The notes below are designed to assist those wishing to say the Benedictine Office according to the officially approved 1962 books (noting that older books can readily be adapted to this end).

They provides notes on the variable parts of the Office only, so should be read in conjunction with the Learn to Say the Benedictine Office notes provided elsewhere on the blog.

The Easter Octave

For the next week the Office is essentially the same each day, a seven day Sunday....

Key to the abbreviations:

MD= Monastic Diurnal (MD, 2004 onwards editions)
AM =Antiphonale Monasticum 1934 (1995 edition).
LR=Liber Responsorialis (downloadable from CC Watershed) and the Nocturnale Romanum.
LH=Liber Hymnarius, 1983
SupAM=Supplement to the Antiphonale Monasticum published by Clear Creek.

THE ORDO



Sunday 1 April – Easter Sunday, Class I with a Class I Octave

Note: Matins and Lauds are included in the Vigil, so do not need to be said by those who attended it.

Matins: All of the feast, LR 82 ff

Lauds:  is said, note Psalm scheme 2 (92, etc), MD 328*/AM 453 ff

Prime to Vespers: Antiphons of Lauds with proper texts of the feast

Compline: Marian Antiphon, Regina Caeli henceforward

Monday 2 April – Monday in the Octave of Easter, Class I

 Matins: Invitatory antiphon and hymn of Easter Sunday, antiphon of the day, ferial psalms, three readings

Lauds to Compline: All as for Easter Sunday including psalms, except for Benedictus and Magnificat antiphons and collect, MD 335*/AM 460-1

Tuesday 3 April – Tuesday in Octave of Easter, Class I

Matins: Invitatory antiphon and hymn of Easter Sunday, antiphon of the day, ferial psalms, three readings

Lauds to Compline: All as for Easter Sunday including psalms, except for Benedictus and Magnificat antiphons and collect, MD 336*/AM 462

Wednesday 4 April – Wednesday in the Octave of Easter, Class I

[Note: The feast of St Isidore is not marked in the Office this year]

SEASON OF EASTERTIDE

I Vespers of Low Sunday, MD 339*/AM 473 ff – Psalms of Saturday under one antiphon (Alleluia), texts from the ordinary of Eastertide (AM 466 ff)
