Happy Christmas! - Ordo notes for the Benedictine Office for the week of Christmas (Dec 24-30)

26r-Nativité.jpg
Petites Heures de la reine Anne de Bretagne, c15th

Sunday - Vigil of the Nativity

As Christmas is on a Monday this year, this Sunday is the Vigil of Christmas rather than the fourth Sunday of Advent.

In the Office, though, the Fourth Sunday is still marked firstly in Saturday Vespers, and at Matins in the first and second Nocturn readings and responsories.  Sources for the responsories can be found on the Benedictine Responsory Blog under the label VigilNativity.

The Vigil of the Nativity marks the end of Advent and the start of the season of the nativity.  You can find notes on the rubrics for Nativitytide here.

Christmas Day

For those saying Matins, all of the necessary chants can be found in the Liber Responsorialis.  Alternativ sources for the responsories, though, can also be found on the Benedictine Responsory Blog (with recordings where available) under the label Nativity.

Octave of Christmas

As Christmas has a second class octave, the psalms after Monday are of the day or particular feast except at Vespers.

At Lauds, the festal psalms are used up to and including Thursday due to the series of feast days (St Stephen, St John and Holy Innocents).

The key exception is Vespers, which uses the festal psalms throughout the week, but with an alternating fourth psalm.

Happy Christmas

And wishing everyone a happy and holy Christmas!

Benedictine Office Ordo for the third week of Advent (December 17-23)

This Sunday marks the start of the more intense period of Advent, making this easily the most complicated week of the Office for the entire year.

Accordingly, you will need to make full use of the ribbons in your Diurnal or other Office book!

Advent days between December 17 and 23 - where to put your ribbons

During this period, the other texts can come from several different sources each day, so I strongly recommend following the Ordo very closely (alternatively, particularly if you are new to the Office, rather than trying to say it all yourself, listen and absorb the Office being sung by the monks of Le Barroux!).

If you are going to say the Office this week, I would suggest deploying your ribbons as follows:

(1) The Ordinary of Advent: The Ordinary of Advent continues to be used each day, with a change of invitatory antiphon for those saying Matins, those set for the Advent day, the particular date, or (most often) a mix of the above.

(2) The psalms for the particular hour you are saying - the normal daily psalms continue to be used, except on Thursday when festal psalms for the feast of St Thomas are used instead at Matins, Lauds and Vespers.

(3) The antiphons for the day of the week between December 17 and 23 (from Monday).

(4) The day within the Third Week of Advent, for the canticle antiphon of  Lauds and the collects (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are  Ember Days, with their own collects).  Note though that the Vespers canticles set out there are not used, and December 21 and 23 have particular antiphons at Lauds that displace those of the Advent day.

You can find more details on the rubrics for this more intense period of Advent here.

Saturday Vespers on 23 December

Because Christmas is on Monday this year, next Sunday is the Vigil of Christmas rather than the Fourth Sunday of Advent.  But the texts for the Fourth Sunday are still used in the Office at I Vespers on Saturday December 23 (ie the Vigil is literally just the Sunday).
