Saying the Traditional Benedictine Office: notes on the Office in Advent 2022.

This year's Ordo is now available for purchase in ebook or paperback form from Lulu, but I've provided the full notes for December below.

As for last year, I will provide shorter notes, with information about each liturgical day and a page reference to the Monastic Diurnal, here from January.

About the Ordo notes

This notes are intended as an aid to those who wish to say the traditional form of the Benedictine Office using the Monastic Diurnal (MD) published by St Michael’s Abbey, Farnborough; the Antiphonale Monasticum (AM); and/or the Breviarium Monasticum.

The Ordo assumes that the user is familiar with the rubrics of the Benedictine Office and generally only sets out those texts that displace those that are normally used at a particular hour, ie those not included in the psalter section of the Diurnal.  Those who are not familiar with the relevant Office books and how to use them should consult the Learn the Benedictine Office page on the Saints Will Arise Blog.

Rubrics and calendar

The notes generally follow the rubrics and General Calendar approved for the Benedictine Confederation of 1962.  In addition to the feasts specified in the General Calendar, it is necessary to add in any local feasts particular to your region, country, diocese, and monastery and/or parish.

Consistent with the decree Cum Sanctissima, the Ordo also identifies some ‘optional Class III feasts’ for certain feasts previously reduced to commemorations during Lent, as well as for selected saints canonized since 1962.

In addition, as a number of the traditional monasteries have maintained or re-introduced various pre-1962 liturgical practices and feasts, the Ordo also includes brief notes on these, such as where some monasteries say I Vespers of Class II feasts,Vespers of Our Lady on Saturday (said on Friday), and some earlier/Roman EF calendar feasts.

Reference material

In addition, cross-references to the feasts of the 1962 Extraordinary Form calendar; selected patronal feasts for selected regions, countries and monasteries; the newer calendar of the Benedictine Confederation;  as well as some previously celebrated vigils and octaves have been included for reference purposes only.

The Office in Advent

 Advent is the most complex period of the year for the Office, so it is worth carefully reviewing how it works, and making sure you know how to place your ribbons, before Advent starts!

The Office during Advent, up to December 16

 Tomus Prior of the Monastic Breviary (MB) 1963 is used from I Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent.

The season of Advent falls into two parts, the first of which extends from the First Sunday of Advent up to December 16.

The ordinary days of Advent in this period are of the third class (Class III). The default collects (for hours other than Prime and Compline) are from the previous Sunday, except for the Ember Days in week three of Advent).

On Sundays:

·      There are ‘proper’ texts for all hours, set out in the Proper of the Season (temporale) section of the Farnborough edition of the Monastic Diurnal (MD) or Breviary (MB) for the relevant Sunday; and

·         At Matins, the antiphons and Nocturn III canticles are of Advent, set out in the psalter section of the MB.

 On weekdays:

·         At Matins the Invitatory antiphon, hymn, versicles and chapter are of the Ordinary of Advent, MB 14 ff;

·         At Matins the (three) readings are of the Advent day (ie Monday in the first week of Advent, etc);

·         At Lauds and Vespers the chapter, hymn, responsory and versicle are of the Ordinary of Advent (MB 15 ff/MD 9* ff), which can be found in the temporale section of your Office book (note: ignore the ‘throughout the year’ texts in the psalter section of your Office book);

·         Lauds and Vespers have Benedictus and Magnificat antiphons for each day of the relevant week of Advent;

·         At Prime to None the antiphons are taken from the relevant Sunday of Advent (MB 16 ff/ MD 13*ff); and

·         At Terce to None, the chapter and versicle are of Advent (set out in the psalter section of your Office book).

On feast days, a commemoration of Advent, consisting of (in order) the canticle antiphon (of the Advent day) and versicle (of the season) for the relevant hour, as well as the collect of the Advent week or Ember Day, is made at both Lauds and Vespers.

The Office in Advent between December 17 and 23

 The days between December 17 and 23 are Class II days, and reflecting this, the liturgy intensifies.

 At Matins there is a proper Invitatory antiphon for the season (Prope est, MB 14).

 At Lauds to Vespers a set of antiphons for the psalms for each day of the week are used, set out at MD 37*/AM 212 ff.

 At Lauds the Benedictus antiphons are normally of the relevant Advent day, but there are specific antiphons said on December 21 and 23.

 At Vespers, the 'O Antiphons' (MD 35-6*/AM 208ff) are sung with the Magnificat, displacing the Magnificat antiphon of the Advent day.

Ordo for the coming liturgical year now available

Just to let you know that the Ordo for the coming liturgical year (which commences on 27 November) is now available in paperback and PDF form from Lulu.

You can also find the full text for December this year, by way of a sample, on the Ordo page on the blog.

As usual the notes provide instructions on the variable texts (ie supplements or substitutions to the psalter section of the Monastic Diurnal, Antiphonale or Breviary) for each day of the liturgical year according to the 1962 calendar and rubrics.

Increasingly, monasteries are adopting some pre-1962 feasts and rubrics, inspired by the possibilities opened by the decree Cum Sanctissima and other developments.  Accordingly, I have substantially expanded the notes on these, including highlighting where Octaves, Vigils and selected other feasts were once said for reference purposes.

And for those who follow Le Barroux, note that its Ordo is also now available online and for purchase through its online shop.

Ordo for 2022-2023 liturgical year: coming soon

 Apologies for those who have sent inquiries to me offline; I thought it would be quickest to answer here.

This a quick note to reassure you that the Ordo for the next liturgical year will be available shortly.

Unfortunately I've been seriously ill for the last several months, so my ability to work on it remains intermittent, but I am in the final stages of proofreading, and am hoping to be able to release the PDF/ebook version by early next week, and the print version shortly thereafter.

As an interim measure, the full Ordo notes for December on the blog, but for a sample see below.

Ordo for 2023 features

As in previous years, the Ordo provides detailed notes on where to find texts for the variable parts of the Office each day; that is, it assumes you are familiar with the basic structure of the hours and the default texts set out in the psalter section of an Office book for the traditional Benedictine version of the Office.

The rubrics and calendar used are as for 1962 (as updated by decrees such as Cum Sanctissima), but this year I have included more detailed notes and cross references to feasts and days abolished in the 1950s and 60s that are being revived in many monasteries, such as I Vespers for Class II feasts, vigils, octaves and so forth.

Page references are to the Farnborough editions of the Monastic Diurnal (MD) and Antiphonale Monasticum (AM). **Indicates that texts for the feast are available in the 'some places' supplement at the end of the Diurnal.

Why pray in Latin? New book...

I wanted to alert readers to a new book that may be of interest, called Latin Prayer. Aspects of Language and Catholic Spirituality, by David Birch.

Here is the information from the flyer:*

Praying in Latin has been part of Catholic life for almost 2,000 years. Each Latin prayer, whether prayed in public worship, or in private contemplation, is saturated with the very rich history of the Catholic Church. The place of Latin prayer thus forms an intrinsic part of the deep and extensive patrimony that is Catholic Tradition. Latin Prayer. Aspects of Language and Catholic Spirituality offers a grammar of prayer, with a linguist's eye for language, and with a Catholic heart for the numinous, which, linguistically and spiritually, is steeped in this patrimony and Tradition.

Over 13 detailed chapters, exploring a wide range of grammatical, linguistic and stylistic features of Latin prayer, and including a very comprehensive bibliography of Liturgical Latin, this book seeks to offer a linguistic means to exploring, and articulating, some of the spiritual depths that lie at the heart of the Latin prayer of the Church.

This is not a ‘how to learn Latin’ book, nor is it a compendium of Latin prayers, but a sustained meditation on prayer, using both a linguistics and theological/scriptural vocabulary, and written by a now retired academic, who has spent a lifetime, as first medieval and then modern linguist, praying both public and increasingly now, private Latin prayer.

It is hoped that those who know no Latin will be inspired by this book to learn it, and those who know it, and perhaps some, or all, of the prayers included here, to revisit it, perhaps with renewed eyes and heart. Above all, it is hoped that everyone, regardless of linguistic skills, will, through these pages, acknowledge, and indeed marvel at, the depth of Catholic patrimony and Tradition in Latin prayer, and its power and potency as a still completely relevant way of prayer.

This is not a call to traditionalist arms; nor a condemnation or critique of contemporary post-Vatican II vernacular Catholicism, but an embrace of the prayer of the Church across its entire history, regardless of how parts of that history may now be viewed.

Available in paperback and as an e-book at https://www.amazon.com; online bookstores or please support your local bookshop by ordering it with its ISBN- 978-0-6454193-0-6

**Apologies to those waiting for my promised review - do hope to get to it soon, but I've been rather ill for the last few months, so haven't managed to complete it as yet.

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love said to me, sorry that's the end of Christmas!

For those looking for the Ordo, just a reminder that you can find a short version of the notes on the page on the blog, or buy the ebook (or hardcopy) through Lulu for more detailed ones.

By way of orientation, we are currently in a period of the office confected following the abolition of most of the octaves in the office: keep in mind that the Ordinary is of Nativitytide, and the Matins readings are of the date.

In earlier times, the Sunday (as it still is in the EF) would have been the Holy Name of Jesus, and indeed it is not clear that the 1962 'reformers' ever got around to actually constructing an actual Mass for the 'Second Sunday after the Nativity'.

The other days in this period were the octave days of the various post Christmas feasts (Jan 2=St Stephen, unless displaced by the Sunday; Jan 3=St John; Jan 4=Holy Innocents; Jan 5=Vigil of the Epiphany).  The 2002 Novus Ordo calendar actually restored the Vigil of the Epiphany (where it is not celebrated on the Sunday).

You can find the instructions for the previous pattern in the Antiphonale Monasticum from page 284.

In the Ordinary Form in many countries, we have the even greater weirdness that is 'Epiphany Sunday', so that instead of the twelve days of Christmas, this year there are only 7....
